Fibonacci, D'Alembert, Paroli, Labouchère: roulette betting systems have fascinating names and enticing promises. The mathematical truth is brutal but liberating: none of them beats the house. But some manage variance better than others. Here's what they really do — and what they don't.

The Truth You Need to Know First

No betting management system can change roulette's RTP: the zero guarantees the house its advantage (2.70% on European) on every single bet, regardless of how you distribute the bets. Systems change how you win and lose over time, not how much you lose on average. Anyone who promises you the opposite is selling you an illusion.

Negative Progression Systems (Increase After a Loss)

Martingale

Double after each loss. It seems foolproof, but the table limit and finite bankroll destroy it: 8 losses in a row with a €5 starting bet = €1,280 on the next bet. We cover it in the Martingale guide.

Fibonacci

Follow the sequence 1-1-2-3-5-8-13... moving forward after losses, back two steps after wins. Gentler than the Martingale (non-exponential growth), but the same underlying trap: a long negative streak requires increasing exposure.

Labouchère

Write a sequence of numbers, bet the sum of the first and last, cross them out if you win, add the loss to the tail if you lose. Complex, flexible, but mathematically identical to the others in the result: the house wins anyway.

Positive Progression Systems (Increase After a Win)

Paroli (Anti-Martingale)

Double after each win, not after a loss. Ride the lucky streaks risking only the winnings, not the capital. Psychologically "healthier": losses stay small, wins can chain. It doesn't beat the house, but it protects the bankroll better.

D'Alembert

Increase by 1 unit after a loss, decrease by 1 after a win. Linear growth, much gentler than the Martingale. The "kindest" of the systems: it limits the bet peaks, suited to those who want long sessions without violent swings.

The "System" That Really Works

The only strategy that concretely changes your experience: playing the roulette with the better RTP. French with La Partage has a house edge of 1.35% against the 2.70% of European and the 5.26% of American. Choosing the right table is worth more than any betting system. We cover it in the roulettes guide.

The Honest Conclusion

Betting systems are tools for emotional and bankroll management, not machines to beat the casino. Use Paroli or D'Alembert if they help you play with discipline and have fun. But never believe anyone who promises guaranteed profit: roulette has no memory, the zero doesn't forgive, and the house always wins over the long run. Knowing this is the real victory.
