What Basic Strategy Is
Basic strategy is the chart that tells you the mathematically best move for every combination between your hand and the dealer's up card. It doesn't guarantee a win (no strategy does), but it minimizes losses over the long run, bringing the RTP to the game's theoretical maximum. The Fundamental Rules (the Pillars)
When to HIT
- Always with 8 or less
- With 12-16 if the dealer shows 7 or higher (they're strong, you have to risk it)
- With "soft" hands (ace + card) up to soft 17
When to STAND
- Always with 17 or more ("hard" hands)
- With 12-16 if the dealer shows 2-6 (they're weak, let them bust)
When to DOUBLE
- With 11 almost always (the strongest hand to double)
- With 10 if the dealer shows 9 or less
- With 9 if the dealer shows 3-6
When to SPLIT
- Always aces and 8s
- Never 10s (you already have 20, don't ruin it) and never 5s (double instead)
- 2s, 3s, 6s, 7s against the dealer's weak cards
The Golden Rule Against Instinct
The hardest moment: you have 16 and the dealer shows 10. Instinct says "stand, I'm afraid of busting". The math says "hit". Why? With 16 you almost always lose anyway by standing; by hitting you have at least a chance. Basic strategy teaches you to trust the numbers over fear — and that's where you win (or lose less).
