French, European or American? The three roulettes look identical but have very different house edges: from 1.35% for French to 5.26% for American. Choosing the right table is the most important decision a roulette player can make — more than any strategy.
The Comparison in Numbers
| French | European | American | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zeros | 1 (single 0) | 1 (single 0) | 2 (0 and 00) |
| Total numbers | 37 | 37 | 38 |
| RTP outside bets | 98.65% | 97.30% | 94.74% |
| RTP straight-up | 97.30% | 97.30% | 94.74% |
| House edge outside | 1.35% | 2.70% | 5.26% |
The Rule That Makes the Difference: La Partage
French roulette has the La Partage rule: if the zero comes up and you bet on an even-money chance (red/black, even/odd, low/high), you recover half your bet. This halves the house edge on the outside bets: from 2.70% to 1.35%. Some variants use En Prison: the bet stays "imprisoned" for the next spin with a similar effect.
Why American Should Be Avoided
The double zero (00) adds a cell without increasing the payouts: 38 outcomes paid as 36. The house edge doubles compared to European on every single bet. There is no compensating advantage — American exists for historical reasons and for the casinos' margins, not for the players.
And Multiplier Roulettes?
Lightning, XXXtreme, Fortune and similar are European roulettes with a twist: reduced payout on straight-up numbers (29:1 instead of 35:1) in exchange for the RNG multipliers. On outside bets they stay identical to European (97.30%). None beats French with La Partage on the even-money chances.
The Final Ranking for Those Playing Outside Bets
- French with La Partage — RTP 98.65%, the mathematically best choice
- European / Immersive / Lightning (outside) — RTP 97.30%
- American — RTP 94.74%, to avoid when an alternative exists
Where to Find Them at Licensed Casinos
Italian live casinos mainly offer European tables (Evolution, Pragmatic); authentic French ones with La Partage are rarer but present in the lineups of some operators. Look for "French Roulette" in the lobby and check the rules for the presence of La Partage or En Prison.
