Bankroll Management: The 5 Rules for Managing Your Gaming Budget
Bankroll management guide: bet sizing by volatility, stop loss and stop win, why never chase losses and the ADM tools.
Gambling is only permitted for those aged 18 and over. Please gamble responsibly. All casinos mentioned in this article are regulated and licensed by ADM (formerly AAMS), the Italian authority that oversees and authorises legal online gambling in Italy. → Verify the licence on adm.gov.it
Bankroll management is the only "strategy" that really works in online gambling: it doesn't increase your chances of winning, but it determines how long you play, how much you enjoy it and, above all, how much you lose in negative periods. Here are the rules used by experienced players.
Rule 1 — The Bankroll Is Separate
The gaming budget is money you can afford to lose entirely: separate from your bank account, defined at the start of the month, never topped up after a loss. If this sentence seems excessive, it is the sign that the current budget is too high.
Rule 2 — The Bet Is a Fraction of the Bankroll
| Type of game | Recommended bet per round | Autonomy |
|---|---|---|
| Low-volatility slots | 1-2% of the session bankroll | ~100 spins |
| High-volatility slots | 0.5-1% | ~200 spins |
| Game shows (Crazy Time, etc.) | 1-2% spread across bets | ~80 rounds |
| Roulette outside / Blackjack | 2-5% | ~40 hands |
The logic: with 200 spins of autonomy you survive the typical droughts of volatile slots and give the variance time to work in both directions.
Rule 3 — Stop Loss and Stop Win
- Stop loss: once the session budget is lost, the session is over. Not "just one more deposit".
- Stop win: once a preset profit is reached (e.g. +50%), cash in at least half. The statistics are brutal: those who continue "because they're on a roll" almost always give it all back.
Rule 4 — Never Chase Losses
Chasing is the most destructive behavior: increasing bets to "recover" turns a negative session into a serious problem. Yesterday's loss has no effect on today's odds — the game has no memory, your account does.
Rule 5 — Use the ADM Tools
Licensed casinos offer by law: customizable deposit limits, temporary and permanent self-exclusion (RUA), complete play history. Setting a weekly deposit limit before starting is automatic bankroll management — the best there is.
The Most Common Mistake: Mental Accounting
"I'm playing with the winnings" is an accounting illusion: the money in the gaming account is yours, identical to what you deposited. Always evaluate the net balance (total deposits - total withdrawals): it is the only number that tells the truth about your gaming activity.
