What a Payline Is
A payline is a predefined line that crosses the reels. You win when 3 or more identical symbols line up on that line, from left to right. Classic slots have 1 payline (the central row). Modern slots have 10, 20, 25, 40 or even 1,024+ paylines.

Every connected group of matching symbols that reaches the threshold pays. It doesn't matter where they are in the grid — adjacency is the only requirement.

Tumble: Almost Always Paired with Cluster Pays
Most cluster pays slots use the Tumble (or Cascade): winning symbols are removed and new ones drop in. If the new set creates another cluster, it pays again — all in the same spin. It creates the possibility of multiple wins in a series from the same spin.
Classic paylines usually don't have tumble — each spin is final.
Megaways: The Third System
Megaways is neither classic paylines nor cluster pays. It is a variable ways-to-win system (from a few dozen to 117,649) where you just need to align symbols on consecutive reels, regardless of the row. Almost always combined with tumble.
