If you've played Gates of Olympus and then Book of Dead, you used two completely different win systems without perhaps knowing it. Cluster pays and paylines are not just technical details — they radically change how often you win, how much you can win and how the slot behaves.
What a Payline Is
A payline is a predefined line that crosses the reels. You win when 3 or more identical symbols line up on that line, from left to right. Classic slots have 1 payline (the central row). Modern slots have 10, 20, 25, 40 or even 1,024+ paylines.
Examples: Book of Dead (10 paylines), Big Bass Bonanza (10 paylines), Starburst (10 paylines), Wolf Gold (25 paylines).
You only win if the symbols are on consecutive reels from the left and on the same payline. With 10 paylines, you cover 10 possible win patterns per spin.
What Cluster Pays Is
In the cluster pays system there are no lines. You win when a certain number of identical symbols are on adjacent cells (horizontally, vertically — or both). The minimum threshold is typically 5-8 connected symbols.
Examples: Gates of Olympus (min 8 symbols), Sweet Bonanza (min 8 symbols), Jammin' Jars (min 6 symbols), Reactoonz (min 5 symbols).
Every connected group of matching symbols that reaches the threshold pays. It doesn't matter where they are in the grid — adjacency is the only requirement.
Practical Differences for the Player
| Aspect | Paylines | Cluster Pays |
|---|---|---|
| Typical grid | 3×5 or 4×5 | 5×5, 6×5, 7×7 or larger |
| Base win frequency | Medium-high (many paylines = frequent small wins) | Lower (needs a large cluster) |
| Single win size | Limited (combination × fixed multiplier) | Potentially very high (cluster + tumble) |
| Combined mechanic | Often static (no tumble) | Almost always with Tumble/Cascade |
| Typical volatility | Medium-low with many paylines | High or very high |
Tumble: Almost Always Paired with Cluster Pays
Most cluster pays slots use the Tumble (or Cascade): winning symbols are removed and new ones drop in. If the new set creates another cluster, it pays again — all in the same spin. It creates the possibility of multiple wins in a series from the same spin.
Classic paylines usually don't have tumble — each spin is final.
Megaways: The Third System
Megaways is neither classic paylines nor cluster pays. It is a variable ways-to-win system (from a few dozen to 117,649) where you just need to align symbols on consecutive reels, regardless of the row. Almost always combined with tumble.
Examples: Dog House Megaways, Bonanza Megaways, Buffalo King Megaways.
Which System Is Better?
- You want frequent wins and long sessions: Paylines with many lines (20-40), low/medium volatility
- You want high potential and accept droughts: Cluster pays with tumble (Gates, Sweet Bonanza), high volatility
- You want a middle ground with high variance: Megaways
RTP is not determined by the win system — it is a provider choice independent of the mechanic. You can find paylines and cluster pays slots with the same RTP.
How to Identify a Slot's System
Before playing, open the game info (ⓘ icon) and look for:
- "Paylines: X" → classic paylines system
- "Cluster pays" or "Adjacency pays" → cluster system
- "Ways to win" or "Megaways" → ways-to-win system
On Spinlytics each game page indicates the win mechanic among the technical data, along with RTP and volatility.
