How the Martingale Works

The principle is simple: you always bet on low-volatility bets (red/black, even/odd, 1-18/19-36). Every time you lose, you double the bet. When you win, you recover all the previous losses plus one unit of profit.

Why the Martingale Doesn't Work

Three concrete and unavoidable problems:

  1. The table limit: every live roulette table has a maximum bet limit (often €1,000-€5,000). With a €5 starting bet and 8 consecutive losses you are already at €1,280, above most limits.
  2. The finite bankroll: 10 consecutive losses with a €5 starting bet require €5,120 at round 11. This sequence is rare but not impossible: with ~0.1% probability in a 200-spin session.
  3. The zero: European roulette has the zero — the probability of winning on red/black is not 50% but 48.6%. This house edge is not eliminated by any strategy.

Other Common Strategies: D'Alembert and Fibonacci

D'Alembert

Increase by 1 unit after each loss, decrease by 1 after each win. Less aggressive than the Martingale, linear growth instead of exponential. It limits the maximum losses but does not eliminate the house edge.

Fibonacci

Follows the sequence: 1-1-2-3-5-8-13-21-34-55-89... After each loss you move forward in the sequence, after each win you go back two steps. Slower growth than the Martingale but still requires long sessions for significant exposure.
