Baccarat: Probability, RTP and House Edge of the Bets (Banker, Player, Tie)

Banker house edge ~1.06% (the best), Player ~1.24%, Tie over 14% (avoid). Why the Banker has a 5% commission, why the Tie is a trap and why systems do not work.

Baccarat looks complicated but has only three main bets — and one is much better than the others. Understanding probability, house edge and why there is a 5% commission is all you need to play it consciously. Here are the numbers.

ℹ️

In one line: in baccarat the Banker bet is the most efficient (house edge ~1.06%), the Player follows (~1.24%), the Tie is a trap (house edge over 14%). The 5% commission on Banker exists precisely because it is the best bet.

Why the Banker Is the Best Bet

Due to the third-card drawing rules, the Banker wins slightly more often than the Player. That is why the casino applies a 5% commission on Banker wins: to rebalance. Even so, the Banker remains the bet with the lowest house edge. Only an apparent paradox: the commission exists because it is the best bet.

The Tie: The High-Payout Trap

The Tie pays 8:1 and attracts for it, but lands rarely and its house edge exceeds 14% — among the worst in the casino. It is the textbook example of how a high payout can hide poor value. The rule is always the same: look at the house edge, not the payout.

No System Beats Baccarat

The roadmaps (Big Road, Bead Plate) you see at tables show hand history, but every hand is independent: they predict nothing. No betting sequence changes the house edge. They are entertainment tools, not prediction — the same principle as games like Bac Bo.

How to Play It Better

  • Bet on the Banker if you want the most efficient bet, commission included.
  • Player is a valid alternative if you prefer to avoid the commission.
  • Avoid the Tie: tempting payout, terrible expected value.
  • Ignore roadmaps as "prediction": they describe, they do not predict.

Baccarat probability and RTP: FAQ

What is the best bet in baccarat?

The Banker: it has the lowest house edge (~1.06%), even considering the 5% commission on wins. The Player follows at ~1.24%. They are among the most efficient bets in the casino.

Why is a commission charged on the Banker?

Because the Banker wins slightly more often than the Player. The 5% commission on Banker wins rebalances the edge, still leaving it the most favourable bet. Without commission it would be too favourable to the player.

Is the Tie ever worth it?

No. It pays 8:1 (sometimes 9:1) but lands rarely and has a house edge over 14%: one of the worst bets in the casino. The high payout does not offset the low frequency.

Are there systems to beat baccarat?

No. Every hand is independent and no betting sequence changes the house edge. "History" tables (roadmaps) describe the past, they do not predict the next hand.
