Baccarat is the table game with the highest play volume in the world — growing strongly in Italy. Simple rules, three possible bets, RTP up to 98.94%. Complete guide to start from scratch.
Basic Rules: in 3 Minutes
Baccarat is not a game of skill: you don't control the cards, you only decide who to bet on. Two "hands" are played: the Banker and the Player. Whoever gets closest to 9 points wins.
Card Values
- Cards 2-9: face value
- 10, J, Q, K: 0 points
- Ace: 1 point
- If the total exceeds 9, only the units digit counts (e.g. 7+8=15 → counts as 5)
A third card is dealt automatically according to fixed rules — you don't decide it.
The Three Bets: RTP Compared
| Bet | Payout | RTP | House Edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banker | 1:1 (less 5% commission) | 98.94% | 1.06% |
| Player | 1:1 | 98.76% | 1.24% |
| Tie | 8:1 or 9:1 | 85.64% / 95.16% | 4.84%–14.36% |
Practical rule: always bet on Banker. The 5% commission is already included in the RTP calculation. The Tie has a devastating RTP — always avoid it.
Why the Banker Is Slightly Favored
The Banker wins about 50.68% of hands (excluding ties), the Player about 49.32%. The 5% commission offsets this advantage — without it, the Banker would be too favored.
Live Variants on Licensed Casinos
Baccarat Squeeze (Evolution)
The dealer slowly "squeezes" the cards before revealing them. Same basic rules, same RTP. Preferred for the more cinematic experience.
Speed Baccarat (Evolution)
Accelerated rounds: ~27 seconds instead of the standard ~50. No additional animation. Perfect for quick sessions. Identical RTP.
Lightning Baccarat (Evolution)
Before each round, 1-5 card values with multipliers (2x-8x). RTP drops to 97.77% (Banker). Only worth it if you're looking for additional volatility.
No Commission Baccarat
No commission, but when the Banker wins with 6 it pays only 0.5:1. Final house edge similar to the classic. Less accounting hassle, same math.
Side Bets: To Avoid
Player Pair, Banker Pair, Perfect Pair, Big/Small — all with a house edge above 10%. They don't improve the game, they only increase the casino's take.
Speed of Play and Bankroll
Live baccarat is fast: 40-80 rounds per hour on Speed Baccarat. With a €5 bet and 60 rounds/hour: hourly exposure €300. With a 1.06% house edge, the expected loss is ~€3.18/hour — low, but amplified by the speed. Managing the number of rounds is as important as managing the bet.
Baccarat vs Blackjack
| Aspect | Baccarat (Banker) | Blackjack (basic strategy) |
|---|---|---|
| RTP | 98.94% | 99.29% |
| Skill required | None | Medium (basic strategy) |
| Speed | High | Medium |
| Limited seats | No | Yes (physical seats) |
